Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
