The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 honor cash to the MVT, which functions to protect the UK's independent music venues.

He was given the prize on mid-October as his latest record his work was named the top album of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots played in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the gigs I played around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports local stages.

He also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to support 38 local spots across the UK.

The money supported locations that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The concept that funds from performances in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their record their work, frontman Jarvis Cocker announced that the group would give their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist split her bounty across a few good causes, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they needed new equipment," she told a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their funds to the youth organization that supported their band, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year they gave their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," said vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT shared it had protected several small stages in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in the city and the second in that location were purchased under the community ownership program, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
